In Cambodia, VIAfilm has assisted in the documentation and outreach of an AIDS education theatre project funded and implemented by Health Unlimited.
Health Unlimited - VIAfilm has recently completed a documentary film evaluating the impact of a HIV/AIDS community education program. The program used community theatre groups as a vehicle for disseminating health messages. In 2005- 2006, staff of the NGO Health Unlimited work with community volunteers to develop community theatre groups which performed in three ethnic minority languages (Tampuen, Kreung and Jarai). The film documents performances in villages and evaluates impact through interviews with NGO staff, performers, and members of the audience. Krom Lakaon Junjiat, 43 minutes, DVD, Phnom Penh, December 2006.
CARE International in Cambodia. - VIAfilm has begun to compile a longitudinal study on video of a small pilot project in bilingual education in ethnic minority languages and Khmer. Six community schools in the two remote provinces of Ratanakiri and Mondulkiri are participating with local volunteer teachers teaching grade one classes. They are supported by the Ministry of Education (through its two Provinvial Offices of Education) and NGO partners. The initial film, shot in December 2006 and January 2007, will be followed up by two subsequent films over the next 3 - 4 years. The aim is to document the impact of bilingual education on children's participation and learning in formal education and the relationship between schools and the communities they serve.
Live and Learn - VIAfilm is working with the Australian based NGO Live and Learn in communities around the Tonle Sap Lake. Live and Learn are delivering an environmental education and community development training project as part of the broader Tonle Sap Biodiversity Conservation Area Program of the Mekong River Commission. VIAfilm has completed a short training film for government counterparts who are employed as trainers under the Live and Learn project. A second film, a short impact evaluation, will be completed by the end of February 2007. |

Launch of Visible Impact Assessment |
We launched Visible Impact Assessment in August 2004. Rob had spent 11 years working for the UN in Afghanistan and Cambodia. In 2002 he returned to Australia to undertake his Masters of Arts, studying documentary film production at the Australian Film, Television and Radio School in Sydney, with the idea that social documentary film can assist communities and projects. Richard continued working as an Education Consultant in Cambodia, where he has spent the past 12 years.
We encourage you to delve into some of the ideas that are contained here and test them against how you are thinking about your own work. |
